BTS Becomes The First Foreign Act To Score Multiple #1 Billboard Albums In Same Year

The Kpop group breaks their personal record and writes chart history for Asian and foreign language artists as ‘Love Yourself: Answer’ tops the Billboard 200.

On September 3, it was revealed that BTS’ ‘Love Yourself: Answer’ had debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 Albums chart, making it the group’s second album to top the chart.

According to Billboard, the final installment to the group’s ‘Love Yourself’ trilogy had dominated the chart with the equivalent of 185,000 album units, consisting of 141,000 traditional album sales for the week ending August 30. This marks an impressive improvement over the group’s first chart-topping album, ‘Love Yourself: Tear’, which had sold 135,000 units in its opening week in May and had previously set the record for Korean music’s biggest week.

The group had previously celebrated success as the first Korean act to top the Billboard chart with ‘Love Yourself: Tear’, and the success of their most recent album sees history written for the Kpop genre’s biggest opening week. The debut of ‘Love Yourself: Answer’ also marks BTS as the first pop act to hit #1 with two separate albums within less than a year since One Direction and their 2014 releases of ‘Four’ and ‘Midnight Memories’.

Though, more significantly, this makes BTS the first Korean, Asian and foreign act have multiple #1 Billboard albums in the calendar year, ‘Love Yourself: Tear’ and ‘Love Yourself: Answer’ becoming the first non-English albums to lead the chart in twelve years with the last being Il Divo’s 2006 album, ‘Ancora’.

Naturally, ARMYs took to Twitter to celebrate the tremendous achievement with the news also earning congratulations from South Korea’s President Moon Jaein.

The group then posted on their official Twitter account, showing their sincere gratitude towards their fans for ‘Love Yourself: Answer’s’ chart-dominating entry on the Billboard 200.
