BTS Becomes The First Korean Group To Have A RIAA Platinum Single & Act With A Gold Album

Within one calendar year, BTS have managed to score three RIAA Gold songs, a Platinum single and a Gold album certified by the RIAA.

On November 9, BTS’ most recent title track, “IDOL”, and the group’s newly released album, LOVE YOURSELF 結 ‘Answer’, had been certified Gold by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA). Also, on the same day, their 2017 smash hit “MIC Drop” had been certified as a Platinum single.

For a single and album to be certified as Gold by the RIAA, a single must sell a minimum of 500,000 units through retail and other additional markets. For Platinum status, a single must sell a minimum of 100,000,000 units. It should be also noted that singles and albums are awarded automatically and that a request must be made by the record label for certification.

The new certifications mark BTS as the first Korean artists to achieve a certified Gold album and the first group to have a Platinum single. With these new additions, the group now extends their lead as the Korean act with the most RIAA certifications. Moreover, BTS appears to be one of the few acts to have a certified Gold album in 2018.

Earlier this year, “DNA” became the group’s first certified Gold single in February with tracks “MIC Drop” and “FAKE LOVE” subsequently achieving the same status within the next six months. “IDOL” becomes BTS’ forth Gold single, and the song and LOVE YOURSELF 結 ‘Answer’ took fewer days to attain certification.
