Another music video joins BTS’ collection of music videos reaching the remarkable YouTube milestone.
On October 7, BTS’ most recent music video for their hit single, ‘IDOL’, became the global phenomenon’s eleventh music video to surpass 200 million YouTube views.
‘IDOL’s music video was released on August 24 and has since broken multiple YouTube records. ‘IDOL’ holds the title for being the most watched music video in within the first 24 hours across all genres and the fastest to reach 100 million views in 2018.
The eccentric and visually stimulating music video was directed by Lumpens director, Yongseok Choi, who is well known among fans for their work with the group for the music videos for BTS’ ‘화양연화’ era, ‘I Need U’, ‘화양연화 on stage : prologue’ and ‘RUN.’ They are also known for directing the striking short films for ‘WINGS’ and remarkable music video for ‘Blood, Sweat & Tears.’ ARMYs have taken ‘IDOL’ to be a critique on the restraints of the idol life, and BTS’ indifference towards being categorized as one label or the other in their current stage of global success. Fans have also shown appreciation for the music video’s tasteful celebration of different cultures.
The feat continues the group’s impressive streak of having the most music videos with over 200 million views for a Korean act, and the news comes shortly after the sentimental music video for their 2017 lead single, ‘Spring Day’, had reached the same milestone in late September.
Besides ‘Spring Day’, other BTS music videos to have hit the 200 million mark include ‘FAKE LOVE’, ‘MIC Drop (Steve Aoki Remix)’, ‘DNA’, ‘Not Today,’ ‘Blood, Sweat & Tears’, ‘Save ME,’ ‘FIRE’, ‘DOPE,’ and ‘Boy In Luv.’
As always, ARMYs took to Twitter to celebrate the accomplishment with #IDOL200M, marking how the feat occurred within hours of BTS’ first U.S. stadium show, and also motivating their fellow fans to keep streaming.
